Standing in for Lisa Gapero, ahead of @MauiTime’s #mauidebate live on @akakuTV 10/22/10
via flickr.comThat’s right. Putting my cyan shoes to relevant use…
Sitting-in so’s @akakuTV peeps could frame up shots. Seeing myself on the monitor (and in this photo) made me realize I have to get on the bandwagon that I’ve never quite been on to begin with. I told my mom that and she just nodded, saying something about how it must have been even worse “because the camera adds ten pounds. Well, unless you’re Jacob.”
Thanks, mom.

Hilariously Unattractive
At one point during my last hospital stint, I didn’t eat for a couple weeks and ended up looking like a Gray. Sooooo funny, I couldn’t help but make a ridiculous sad face and preserve my ugliness for all time.
The anitpode of starvation is binge eating, which I do with more regularity. This is me at my very fattest.
My chemo pills often came in these blue blister packs, that looked too much like googley eyes to not play with.
It was WEEKS before I had my first cup of Jell-o. Not sure how that happened?!

You’re Number One!
There were a handful of pieces I lalalalalaloved, but if I had to pick just one, it’d be this beautiful multi-medium, multi-paneled piece depicting an Asian Maui demigod lassoing the sun. Clever usage of Japanese theme scrapbooking paper and fabric, along with Hawaiian prints, that added great texture and detailed interest to the piece. But, the trick and poweful usage of metallics did not overshadow the artist’s pure painting talent—great ohia trees and superb detailing in the folds of Maui’a robe (amazingly maintained pattern).Sent from my iPhone

The Essence of Maui - Invitational Exhibition
How lame am I? I missed Art Maui at the Schaefer International Gallery! I don’t think I’ve ever missed a year while living on-isle. Alas… Well, I will try to subdue my remorse with looking back at photos of “The Essence of Maui,” (which ran January 12 - February 20, 2010) and attend the opening of “The Artist Within Us,” tomorrow (runs April 10 - April 24, 2010). Speaking of which, most folks attending the new show will go in support of their childrens’ work, while I’m going in support of my parent’s (I’m a teacher’s kid)… Ha!“A select group of Maui artists have been asked to create one unique work based on their personal interpretation of what the essence of Maui is to them. This exhibit offers innovative ideas that will broaden the perception of Maui as a “tropical paradise” and encourage us to examine new ways of thinking about our island.”
Supported in part by the County of Maui - Office of Economic Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Artists Featured:

Gowalla Addiction
Our fearless leader @tommyrusso turned me onto Gowalla, and I’ve since been slightly adicted. En route to do a little microfilm research at the campus library, I snagged two spots (public sculpture). “Dolphin,” is a mainstay I remember from my early youth, and the newly erected “A Path Through the Trees,” is an addition I’m happy keiki henceforth will enjoy.“Dolphin” by 1987 MCC Welders: Linlee Boulet, Eric T. Sato, Gwen Brush and John Ringen (instructor)
“A Path Through the Trees” by Saturo Abe
“The sculpture reflects both the island topography and life’s journey. Saturo Abe was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1926. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts and the Arts Students League in New York.” (State Foundation of Culture and the Arts - Art in Public Places - State of Hawaii - Department of Accounting and General Services) Sent from my iPhone -
Pa’ina Cakes too Beautiful to Eat!
I love the way these stylized candy leaves droop, and the trippy shrooms are a classic, colorful touch! The ‘rock’ base is most impressive—so realistic!Sent from my iPhone

Johann Sebastian Bach for sale at da Bailey House Museum Gift Shop
Reviewed this book for @MauiTime, and cool to see it displayed at the Bailey House Museum’s Gift Shop (I snagged Gowalla spots on both). Ooh! They have so many goodies there I adore… books galore, screen printed bags, pueo hot pads, pikake oil… Maui Historical Society members save 10% on purchasesAlso, I was happy to hear from executive director Nicole McMullen, that March saw their highest visitor counts since August 2008. Of course, I’d be happier to hear of exponential increases here on out!

My first (of what will hopefully be recurring) zombiefication. Thanks to fearless MauiTime leaders Jen and Tommy for hookin’ up such a bad-ass holiday card (2009) with Len Peralta.
